Hatchery & Recirculation short courses available

North Coast's Institute's National Fishing Industry Education Centre (Natfish) is continuing in it's practical approach to aquaculture training. In addition to the Certificate level courses offered by distance education, short courses on offer in 2006 are; recirculation technology in February and July and hatchery techniques in June and November.

The hatchery workshop focuses on native Australian fish. Australian Bass will be used for the June workshop. The techniques are the same that are used for other native fish such as silver perch. This will allow participants who farm silver perch to master the skills in readiness for the following summer spawning season.

The workshop covers hands on sessions injecting broodstock, collecting & counting eggs, transferring larvae and sampling larvae. Pond preparation for fry is also covered in detail with practical plankton sampling and identification exercises. Over the course students will be involved in all phases of spawning, hatching and larval rearing.

The workshop runs from Tuesday 20 th through to Friday the 23 rd June at Natfish. For students who already have industry experience and/or have completed the aquaculture biology and water quality components of the certificate course, the course costs $342.

The next recirculation technology short course offered from Natfish starts on the 22 nd February 2006. Recirculation systems are becoming more popular as a way of growing fish and minimising water use. Most pond based farms also have recirculation systems of varying degrees of complexity to purge fish or crayfish. The courses covers; suitable species for recirc, system components– solids filters, biological filters, foam fractionators, ozone units, UV units etc, operation and maintenance, managing water quality, health, feeding etc. There are sessions on farming systems, Government regulations and operating costs.

This workshop is offered as;

2 days, 23 rd , 24 th February - for people who already have a good grounding in fish biology and water quality eg have completed appropriate modules from the Certificate II in Aquaculture.

Cost: $297

3 days 22 nd, 23 rd , 24 th February - for people who need an introductory day in fish biology and water quality.

Cost: $469

The workshops are run at Natfish at Trenayr near Grafton. For further information please ring Lisa Terry or Glen Searle on 0266 414 400
